Dissect Me
for cello
Op. 27 (2024)

My first mature work was a solo cello piece called "Kulta," which I wrote when I was nineteen. It was a decent piece, but it was very influenced and informed by other early Twentieth century works I had been studying at the time. After initially feeling the work did not fully carry its own weight (though now I feel it does), and spending lots of time pursuing extant solo cello works, it seemed I had lost my interest in writing for solo cello.

This was complicated even further by my own journey toward a unique and sophisticated voice as a composer. I couldn't really find what my sound was for several years, and this definitively meant there was no way for me to write for solo cello until I had found that voice. Finally I found a way to write for my favorite instrument on its own that was able to convey the sound world I had cultivated in myself over several years.

This piece is terribly unfriendly and is meant to be exactly that.
