PETER OLAF SWANSON
De Ave Pheonice
for violin and cello
Op. 28 (2024)
This piece is yet another example of how my music
ends up requiring use of a title that strongly suggests a certain inspiration that is in fact, not a source of inspiration. De Ave Pheonice is an ancient poem about the phoenix, and while there may be some slight connection between the idea of a phoenix being reborn from ashes and the way the music in this piece is continually reborn musically, it really is just a fitting title and that's all.

The piece requires alternate tuning from both musicians.

It was premiered by Caroline Beckman and myself in April of 2025 at Benedictine College.
