Taught Artificially to Burn On the Side of the Angels

This piece was written in just four days for the Domino Ensemble's 2024 Young Composer Workshop. The Domino Ensemble is s new music group based in Knoxville, Tennessee, and I was one of three composers selected for the opportunity. The work received its premiere on May 18th, 2024 by Hillary Herndon and Bernadette Lo as part of the Knoxville Chamber Music Society's Third Season.

The work is rhapsodic and austere, with a brooding figure in the piano that marks each new section. The viola displays many different emotions and affects over the course of the piece, including one dance-like section that features notes so high that they are almost beyond the fingerboard.
