PETER OLAF SWANSON
Alleluia
for three cellos
Op. 30 (2025)
This piece was begun in the Fall of 2024 while in my first semester of teaching music history at Benedictine College. It had been some time since I had been immersed in the sounds of chant music of the early Catholic church, and I was able to begin reconnecting to its power and beauty. I began this work with a bit of inspiration from Byzantine chant specifically, and was able to revisit and finish it in the early months of 2025.

The piece features a section where two of the cellists sing on the familiar word "Alleluia," and a section that conforms to strict species counterpoint, another topic I teach at Benedictine.
