...and the sorrow of sincere devotion
for oboe and piano
Op. 9 (2016)

In the summer of 2016 I was named winner of the Iowa Composer Forum's Student Commission Competition. I was commissioned to write a new work for Heather Armstrong, Professor of Oboe at Luther College. The work was premiered at the ICF's Midwinter Festival the next January, though I was unable to attend because of a blizzard that stopped flights out of Minneapolis!

The work functions in four continuous sections, each one focusing on a style of oboe writing I admire. The piece also calls for the oboist to play several notes on a suspended cymbal.

This piece was selected for the 2024 New Music On the Bayou Festival in Louisiana.
